I was born and brought up in Paisley. I went to school at St. Aloysius College, Glasgow, which is a well-known Catholic school run by the Jesuits. I studied History and Law at Glasgow University and started my legal career in a High street practice in Lanarkshire in the 1970s. I hated it. Conveyancing, Wills and Estates were just not for me. But gradually on a person by person and case-by-case basis I developed an interest in personal injury work. Lanarkshire was an area full of heavy industry and coal mines. This was before the era of health and safety, and I listened daily to men (and it was almost exclusively men in those days) who had lost fingers and limbs in workplace accidents, were suffering coal dust diseases, and had been deafened by factory work. Most of these men had been worn out by work, but almost without exception they shared a stoical resilience and sense of humour. When I began work , eligibility for Pneumoconiosis Benefit was on the say so of a certain Coatbridge GP, who was notoriously stingy with any diagnosis. This despite the fact that so many of his male patients were ex coalminers who had spent their whole working lives inhaling coal dust. The men were philosophical about Dr.S. The local joke was he never diagnosed it because he couldn’t spell it. I tried to do my very best for each one, and over the years developed a specialism. When I was trained conventional legal wisdom was that lawyers should be detached, should never identify with their clients and should never let it get personal. If any claimant lawyer thinks that now he or she should change jobs. I’ve helped win 100s of cases for people, but I haven’t won every case, and those that I lost rankle to this day. But I learned so much from those losses and have put each lesson to good use . I’m afraid that I didn’t buy into every aspect of a Jesuit education, but I did take this away. That the only way to have a meaningful life is by serving others and giving of yourself. Everyone in this practice shares that belief. Conway Accident Law Practice will never be a high volume personal injury firm. We don’t advertise on TV, we don’t pay for Google ads, and we never pay claims company for cases. Our competitive advantage is exceptional customer service, one person, one case at a time. Check our Google reviews. We are a niche specialist practice and we take every case personally. We will never be outworked, outspent or go into any case unprepared. Every staff member at the Conway Accident Law Practice works on this basis. Away from work, I have an encyclopaedic and completely useless knowledge of 60s and 70’s rock music. If you need to know a Beatles B side let me know. I was a badminton international player, and am former President and Chairperson of Badminton Scotland. I believe everyone’s life would be improved if they played just once a week. I was proud to be one of the bid team which brought the World Badminton Championships to the Emirates stadium Glasgow in 2017. The finest players in the world were brought to what I consider to be the finest city in the world – Glasgow. No place like home. Ich bin ein Glaswegian.
